The Mazingira Safi Competition was launched in 2010 to inspire students to own their own environment.
The Senior School students’ creativity and logical reasoning are tested in line with United Nation’s Environmental Programme’s (UNEP) theme for the yearly World Environment Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Connecting people to nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator’.
Through art, students create themed drawings and paintings. Through essays, they write about a topic of their choice in line with the theme in a second language. And through photography, they take photos that are also in line with the theme.
Winners in the Junior and Senior categories are awarded on World Environment Day as the school marks this day by everyone including teachers wearing green attire.
The students take part in the conservation of Karura Forest and intend to include like-minded schools in their efforts.
The Eco-Club also plans to clean up Nairobi River from the Museum area to Arboretum.
